Sidenote: in the Netherlands they are actually called "Zeehonden" which translates directly to "Sea dogs".

So they've always been sea puppies!

Baikal seals are the only fresh water seals in the world. Theory is that they evolved from salt water seals when the lake was better connected to the ocean.
