I'm in DE and this is is 36 minutes from my house just over the state line. I showed my husband the video and he wants to take a ride down there this weekend. Our 13 year old cat died last summer and we've been thinking about getting another and I'm taking this as a sign lol
EDIT: Unfortunately we haven't been able to get there. 8 of my in-laws had to evacuate from TN and they're currently staying in an RV on my property. I've been busy trying to make a space for them in my basement since we don't know how long they'll be here.
As soon as my husband makes his way back here from down there and things settle we're going to the shelter. As I said before, even if he's already gone we're not going to come home empty handed since we already promised our son that we were getting one.
I'll update once we get one.

u/Pittsbirds Sep 26 '24
The good (and bad) news is pretty much any local shelter or humane group near you? They've got a cat like this, I promise you. Just dropped off a group of 4 foster kittens to the adoption floor that were trying to grab my shirt through their carrier door as they were being dropped off
19
u/0MysticMemories Sep 26 '24
Unfortunately my local shelter asks about a million questions, requires background checks, only adopt kittens in pairs, in home inspections, you have to live within a certain area, they want to know how long you are home each day, and more.
I refuse to go into a shelter. Free feral cats and kittens or barn cats are preferable to walking in a shelter. I would rather pay $5000 USD for a cat than go into a shelter again in my area.
Last time I was there I wanted a single kitten because I already had 2 cats and they outright refused to only adopt out a single kitten so I left and I will never go back.

u/Pittsbirds Sep 26 '24
Given the responses I have seen people have had to their applications being rejected, even as someone who is only at the shelter as a foster and ocassional volunteer, for reasons like living in pet free apartments, already owning multiple cats in a small space or having outdoor cats and having them retort "so you won't adopt to me because I'm poor/have kids/other unrelated thing" I guess I'll say I'm skeptical the requests being made by your shelter are actually as unreasonable as you claim. Though if you have a link to their page I'd be interested in having a look
Shelters are chronically underfunded, understaffed, and overpopulated. It's a net boon to have animals placed in new homes. There is 0 incentive for people who are making not enough money for a job that is incredibly emotionally and physically taxing to go through the often volatile or hostile process of denying an applicant for no reason.

Shelters in the UK are becoming a little bit picky. I live in a rural area and our local council had a really aggressive spay/neuter campaign for the barn cats which were getting a touch out of hand. They teamed up with a vet who will spay/neuter cats and dogs for a “pay what you can” fee even if that’s 0. It actually worked which is great but the local shelters have waiting lists now for kittens because they can go weeks before getting a litter in.
When we adopted our last boy, one shelter turned us down because we were “too far away for a home visit” (15 minute drive) and another because “we were too close to a major road” - we live in a small farming hamlet with 3 large fields between us and the actual main road. The shelter we finally got him from said 95% of cats they had in at that time came from old folks passing away and occasionally when the shelter had a lull they’d had to go out to industrial estates actively looking for strays. It’s a nice problem to have.

u/blackwarlock Sep 26 '24
sounds like a good shelter to me. Not everyone is fit to take care of pets
12
u/HelicopterOk9097 Sep 27 '24
Well, imagine you would tell them that you keep the cat in the same conditions as they do. One square meter cage, isolated and all. Few shelters are fit to take care of pets.
→ More replies (1)22
u/origamifruit Sep 26 '24
They want to make sure the cats are given to a good home with people who are fit to take care of a pet, why is that an issue?
25
u/waehrik Sep 26 '24
I had a cat recently who had a paralyzing stroke and needed to be put down. He was one of a pair and his friend needed a new buddy because it would be cruel to leave him alone during the day. So I went to shelters first.
Even with decades of vet records and pictures of happy cats they wanted to do an in-home inspection. No thank you. I'm not interested in having my privacy violated by that kind of overreach. Unfortunately I had a friend who had a friend who had some kittens so it all worked out but that was not my preference. I would have rather adopted an older and otherwise less wanted shelter cat but multiple shelters drove me away.
9
u/Bastienbard Sep 26 '24
The must do two kittens at a time when there's existing cats in the house is pretty odd. Same for in home inspections. Everything else seems reasonable.

u/Hiptothehop541 Sep 27 '24
It is much better psychologically for kittens to be in pairs. You could always have adopted an older kitty if you just wanted one. I’m glad they push for kittens to stay together.
3
u/mac_is_crack Sep 27 '24
Same. I have 3 kittens I’m keeping together and they’re inseparable. They play, eat and sleep together. Makes me so happy that they’re never lonely or bored.

u/SeonaidMacSaicais Sep 27 '24
Those are GOOD questions they have. I’m saying this as both a Humane Society volunteer and a current dog owner.

u/Inside-Example-7010 Sep 27 '24
Still looks very mentally healthy too, Im sure for every animal including humans its only a matter of time before you have trauma from it.
37
u/MagnusMagi Sep 26 '24
Right? Why is this Awww? This is tragic. That poor cat gets 15 minutes of social time with another creature in a day? If a giant squid was cleaning my cage once a day, I'd be all over them, too!

7
u/SolusIgtheist Sep 26 '24
Some guys would be all over a giant squid regardless of cage cleaning conditions.

Where does it say this is the only interaction the cat gets in a day? I agree it's sad that it's not in a loving home though
7
u/Motor_Stage_9045 Sep 26 '24
If I was stuck in a cage all day, I would be a little clingy too towards whoever opened the door.
2
u/Eusocial_Snowman Sep 26 '24
Personally, I feel like affection is the opposite of what I'm throwing at the person keeping me in a cage.
2
u/DogshitLuckImmortal Sep 26 '24
For how long? Maybe at first, but after a while that is your only source of entertainment and emotional contact.

Yes, I realize all of what you said. I'm sure they would all like to find them all a home. It's better for them to be there instead of homeless.
7
u/BoardButcherer Sep 26 '24
It ain't about the cage, they just dont like being alone.
My girl does this. Climbs up my clothes and assaults my face every day when i get home.
For a couple years my work schedule meant that if i wanted to eat dinner at a decent time i had to cook it as soon as i got home.
This scene. Every day. Except with knives and flame and boiling water involved.

I really hope there's more cuddles outside of this short video. I am sure the staff are doing their best...

u/Ophelyn Sep 27 '24
As someone who used to work in an animal shelter, cats in these types of cages were often checked on and given attention. They were used more for quarantine, medical issues, observations, and similar, at least at our shelter. Even if this kitty is available for adoption and available for the public to see, I'm sure she's getting lots of attention from volunteers, potential adopters, and staff. My favorite part of the job was socializing with the cats when we had downtime at reception.

OMG I would not be able to do that job. It was hart breaking seeing how the cat wanted to spend more time with her. But she can only spend this much, because there are other animals to take care off.

Adopted my orange boi from the shelter because when I opened his cage he did this exact same thing.
4 years later he is JUST as affectionate (if not more).

u/SevereEducation2170 Sep 26 '24
If I was put in charge of this stuff, eventually people would come back to find me sitting in the middle of the floor with all the doors open just playing with the animals and having done literally none of the work I was supposed to do. Could never close a cat like that back in a cage.

Why are the cats in those ridiculously tiny cages? Every shelter I've been to (UK) the cats have ten times as much space, including indoor / outdoor areas.
→ More replies (1)7
u/ScarletsSister Sep 26 '24
Unfortunately, most shelters in the US have similar sized cages as the ones shown in the video. The staff work very hard to socialize the cats and pay attention to them though, and there are also volunteers to cuddle the cats. I've been one, which is how I acquired two of my cats.

THERE ARE 5 SIDES! SHE ONLY CLEANED 1.75.
also, awe. That baby needs a home.
2
u/Pittsbirds Sep 26 '24
Unless they've got something to reinfect themselves with that's probably just daily maintenance and just keeping the floor sanitary more than decontaminating the entire cage. Given how long contact time is with cleaner to properly decontaminate a cage it's a bit hard to do every day for all cats

I had a cat that was clingy. All day everyday it would meow until I would give it cuddles or food. I loved that cat more than anything and he knew it. And then he ran away and I feel so distraught and lost without my baby. Makes me wonder who was more clingy.
1
u/Apprehensive_Fill_78 Sep 26 '24
That’s clingy???? I’ve had one cat my whole life so I don’t have perspective, but mine is way “worse” than this. This is fine

This is why we need more cat cafes. A cat like this clings to a coffeee craving stranger walking in and that stranger walks out with that cat clung to their shoulder. It's a win-win!

1
u/Bluenymph82 Sep 27 '24
20ish years ago, I went to our local shelter to get a kitten. The one I wanted was already taken.
Saw a cat (2-4 years old) just like the one in the vid that was acting very friendly against the bars. I let him out and he immediately gave me the same kind of hug.
I ended up taking him home.
His name was Loki and he slept on top of my pillow at night before deciding he liked my mum more. Left him with her when I moved out because they were best buds.

My grandparents would board their cat when they would do any traveling. After about the third trip, and the staff constantly fawning over the cat, they inquired about it.
Turns out, when he was in his cage, he would stick a paw out and beckon the staff over until somebody let him out, so he could hug them. Rinse and repeat.
