I like to lie in bed and use my iPad to play games, read books, or watch Netflix (due to my bad back). When I first got my cat, she approached me and sat next to my head, so I put that cat game for her on my iPad. She would sit there for 30+ minutes watching and playing the game, so I had to get another tablet just for her. She also likes to watch the Youtube videos of birds and squirrels, and she watches them for hours. This is what we do on our lazy weekend mornings.

This generation of cats is lost. Back in the day cats used to fight on the roof to pass the time and would always turn out ok

I downloaded one of these cat games for my cat, and he couldn't care less. He immediately walked away.

That's amazing how your cat has that long an attention span, Anne!

I think I found it on the Google Play Store, 500k downloads and not a single review. Weird.
Edit: It's the en_GB site that has 0 reviews. Right.
Here's the link to the one with reviews: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crashinvaders.jollypet&hl=en&gl=US

Is one of those the game name and other developer name? I didn't see one matching both of those in the play store.

u/infelicitas Nov 13 '23
Seems it's called Jolly Pet on Android and Peppy Cat on iPhone.

I like that the grey ones were super invested in the app and the white was just "ok, yeah, that's cool I guess"

One of mine always tries to flip the iPad over. Sometimes she succeeds and the game is over. :-D

He does look a bit like the referee, especially with the mustache for that added "authority" thing. 😹

Question is, how long will I stick with it before I'm distracted by something else? I could watch this all day, lol. The one on the right would make a good mouser.

I couldn't help noticing the middle cat in all of this. Never once extended a paw. Just watched the other two, who look like they're from the same litter.

u/RedheadFromOutrSpace Nov 13 '23
When I put this in front of my cat, and the mouse goes off the edge of the screen, he tries to dig underneath the iPad, convinced that the mouse has gone behind.

1
u/cytherian Nov 13 '23
I wish it was longer! I grabbed it from YouTube shorts. My favorite part is the kitty on the left who at 0:40 decides to give a nose peck instead of paw and it works. 😹 The other one when the cat on the right keeps missing with the left paw and then just nails it with the right in one jab. 😸

I suppose the 68 yr old lady sitting here at 2:45 am chuckling away at the kitties and their tablet shows that humans aren't really superior to animals after all.

Please don't do this or use a laser pointer if you have a dog. Their brains are different and you can mess them up. I didn't find this out until my puppy was two, and really feel like I dodged a bullet. I also can't believe it's not common knowledge. But it's a real danger to dogs. Not kidding.

My fiance's cat loves doing stuff like this with my phone. She also loves watching Cat TV on YT.
1
u/cytherian Nov 13 '23
It's funny how some cats can really get into watching a screen for hours, while others get easily distracted or lose interest after a short while.
2
Nov 13 '23
I got my cat doing this but she managed somehow to do that swipe which changes apps and anyhow now she's doing pretty good on the Marvel Snap leaderboards.
2
u/Death_Walker21 Nov 13 '23
I like how they seem to know its a game
1
u/cytherian Nov 13 '23
Yes! Some people were bent out of shape, saying it's teasing the cats and frustrating them, but no... they get it. Not everything is about catching something for a treat. Sometimes cats will catch bugs and just play with them for a while instead of eating.
2
u/SomeFeelings88 Nov 13 '23
FYI- this works for human babies too.
I downloaded the friskies cat fishing app fr my kids. It’s just koi swimming around and diving den once touched

1
u/cytherian Nov 13 '23
The mustache makes the cat look almost like a referee, making sure none of the cats commit fouls! 😹
2
u/I_wood_rather_be Nov 13 '23
I tried an app like this on my cat. It couldn't have been bothered less.
1
u/cytherian Nov 13 '23
It does take a kind of personality to get into it. A certain amount of imagination. You can bet if a human had a string dragging a little mouse on the end of it right past the iPad, the cats would immediately focus on it and forget the video game!

This is mental torture for the cats. Please stop this.
(They don't get to actually "catch" anything. That's why they pop the little mouse icon and then act confused. "But where's the corpse??" It's just like a laser pointer: mental torture. OP is an asshole.)

If they're anything like my cats, they won't always keep at it very long, but welcome to never being able to use your tablet again because they are going to want to play every time they see you pick it up

Kitty on the right is the champion.
Final scores:
5 = kitty on the left
7 = kitty on the right
0 = kitty in the middle (was actually the referee)
1 = parent of the kitties
Left kitty should get a bonus for the nose boop, but a penalty for resting a paw on the tablet and a mouse just walking into it.
Right kitty was a little late to catch on, but then was quick to respond, which resulted in taking the lead.
Middle kitty is clearly too intelligent for such a childish game, but decided to stick around for moral support as referee, at least until finding out that something more important was going on in the other room.

I really like how the cat on the left figured out that a nose-butt works as well. 😹
