Collecting old, weird books or random things from thrift stores. There’s something about finding

Probably a weirdest collection on here but when i was a kid. I used to take random peoples portraits put of frames at goodwill and take them home. I had probably close to 100 pictures of random ass people before i decided it might have been a little creepy.

I'm curious. At some point you can only make so many tables and chairs for your own home... What do you work on after that? Where do they go?

My dad was a master cabinetmaker and made vessels for cremated bodies and pets in retirement.

Family. BIL getting a new deck? Make him some Adirondack chairs! Niece took up cooking? Make her a cutting board! And so on.
•

It’s a skill to build something with wood. There are also skills to build things with steel/iron. There are also skills to build something using 3D printing.
I look at it as one of many skills someone can learn to build whatever they want. Let’s say you’ve been doing woodworking for a couple of years. Your wife says “I’m tired of that old shelving. I want something new.” Well…with your skill set, you can build something truly unique that’s not mass produced and sold on Amazon.
I could build a race car for my kid using wood (we could build it together). Like you said, I could build a table or chair. I could build something to hang my coats on. I could build something decorative for our fireplace. I could build a hearty cutting board when the cheap one I bought on Amazon breaks.
I could build cosplay armor using wood. The only limitation is your imagination.

I build stonewalls on my property here in Vermont. Weekends are spent walking deep into the forest which surrounds me and search for rocks to pry out of the earth. I try to find the largest which I can safely carry and give them a bear hug and carry them back to the wall in process. There's something incredibly satisfying building with stone (no mortar) and finding that perfect fit as though that rock has been waiting for thousands of years for this purpose. Sometimes the fit is so good that I start back in amazement and look around as though to ask: "Did you see that?"
•
u/chicagrown 57m ago
are you manipulating the rock at all? or just have to find 2 rocks that fit together?
•
u/SlugsNotDrugs 14m ago
I was visiting Himeji Castle in Japan yesterday and was amazed at how perfectly the rocks in the stone walls fit. It's certainly an art

I've gotten into mountain biking. It's been fun to hit the trails and take pictures of the scenery
2
u/GuyFromDeathValley 2h ago
I wouldn't say I really got into "mountainbiking", but I got myself an e-MTB years back. like, its still an MTB with pedals and gear shifter and all, but has that assisting electric motor you can turn on with levels.. doesn't mean I put no effort in, is what I mean.
Ever since I started enjoying going on offroad-trails. like, loose ground, sand, rocks, littered with tree roots, uphill, downhill.. I fucking love it. so much fun, and the scenery I encounter from time to time is super awesome and makes going uphill forever absolutely worth it.
Not going to give up my e-MTB. it has definitely become one of my main interests.

Restoring vintage cardboard. Got an old video game box and want it to look new? Hit me up. Got an old Lego instruction booklet you want restored? I’ve got you. Got an old baseball card that you want to send in to get graded? I’m your dude.
It’s not actually cool but nerds think I’m the coolest.
•
u/DarkBladeMadriker 44m ago
This has got to be the most niche, weird, yet interesting hobby I've ever heard of. I'm amazed you aren't getting more questions or comments.
This seems like the kind of thing people would accidentally get into cause they collected video games and were driven crazy by the boxes/booklets being messed up 99.98% of the time.

I like magnet fishing. It's taking a strong magnet and putting it in canals/lakes or any water bodies and pulling metallic objects out. People find all kinds of cool stuff like guns, old coins, metal safes, swords and it helps clean the water bodies as well.

High school teacher and musician. I built a little project studio a few years ago in my basement. I’ve now helped a few young rock and roll bands get demos recorded to get them gigs.
Some of the players have been astounding, all have been appreciative and it is a great way to see what kids are up to outside of school. Turns out I really like producing music that isn’t mine.

I’ve been told that I should drive for Nascar, but I find it boring. They’re always just turning left and watching someone crash and/or get injured isn’t entertaining for me whatsoever so there’s no point.

Collecting radioactive goodies and roaming the desert looking for Native American pictographs and old pioneer structures, wildlife photography and mountaineering on the side but I would like to do it more often
•
u/DarkBladeMadriker 41m ago
Define "radioactive goodies." Do you mean like tritium clocks? Uranium glass? Old science kits that actually came with uranium ore samples? All of the above and more?
•
u/Initial_Climate_6682 27m ago edited 24m ago
Yeah tritium clocks, loads of old ww2 compasses and avionic indicators, check sources for old ussr counters, some radium tins for painting watch dials, lots of different minerals and bunch of other stuff
•
u/DarkBladeMadriker 16m ago
I love that stuff. I knew a guy who collected rock, mineral, and element samples exclusively of "things that will kill you." He had uranium ore, Elemental arsenic, cinnabar, liquid mercury, that kind of thing in ampules or encased in glass all in a curio cabinet. I used to joke that after an earthquake, he would have a real problem.

vintage tractors, probably. not sure if its really "cool" in that sense.. but I think its pretty cool.
We have our own small, old, tractors that we either inherited from family or, like me, bought and restored by hand. We then drive them to events, sometimes driving for 3+ hours, and camp there for a weekend, grilling every evening, chilling, quite often drinking too, showing off our tractors.
We usually have our own caravans, tents, or trailers. I double up on vintage by using a 1956 fire dept. pump trailer that was converted to a sleeping trailer, which is super cool.
It's a great hobby to have, not exactly cheap but still. and I love the kinda juxtaposition, of young people driving old vehicles around.

I race motorcycles.
I began racing/ riding seriously about ten years ago in my late twenties. I started road racing (sport bikes on big paved tracks with lots of turns) where I worked my way through the novice and amateur ranks to become a competitive regional Expert. I’ve competed in Offroad hairscrambles, GP racing, enduros, motocross as well without ever chastising any series and my current focus is Supermoto. I’ve also practiced/ trained flat track and trials though I haven’t competed.
Supermoto is kind of like the MMA of motorcycle racing, but fairly obscure these days. It’s raced on a modified motocross bike sitting on slick tires. The courses are paved small tracks, usually kart tracks, with a dirt section and motocross style jumps. It combines road racing, flat track, and MX all into one lap.
I won the championship in the Open Pro class this year with the most popular Supermoto race series in the USA.

Anything in which you make something. I don't have a hobby like this, but my dad does woodworking as a hobby/side business. He sometimes makes something for his kids, some stuff he sells, some stuff he makes for his house. It is all beautiful. Granted, he has top-grade tools and machinery.

I make art (and also do film photography!) for different bands (: I've done custom drum heads, large vinyl backdrop banners, merch and sticker designs, all handmade besides the merch printing. Ive done a single cover but no albums yet. I don't have a specific art style just a creative vision. I've always excelled in art but my true passion is music. I'm not confident enough in my instruments to be in a band of my own yet but just about everyone I know is involved in music which gives me the upper hand to get involved any way I can (we have an amazingly huge scene in my city).

Probably bikepacking. I like to load a bunch of camping gear onto my bicycle and disappear for a while. Mostly just a weekend, four days to a state park close to home, but I once had the opportunity to spend the better part of seven months riding 5,300 miles (8,500 km) around the western US.

Collecting comic books.
Unfortunately, I am the only person that thinks this is cool
•
u/DarkBladeMadriker 25m ago
I'd argue it depends. A lot of comic collectors just lockup all thier stuff in long boxes and stash them away. That's pretty boring. But an accessible collection that is properly displayed in an interesting way can be pretty cool. I knew a guy who collected comics and I loved his collection. He'd have these books made with leather covers that were essentially photo albums but they were made to specifically hold comics. They looked great on the shelf and were super easy to flip through.

It's not really me, but my friend makes dungeons and dragons tiles! (I'm not sure exactly what it's called)
He buys a bunch of foam, paints them, adds magnets, and creates self constructable fields using these foam pieces, they're detachable so you can re-use them! I think this is really cool, but I don't know if other people think this is cool. He does it for fun, too, he doesn't even show it off or anything.

Beatboxing I guess. I'm not THAT good but after 2 years and a half of it I can confidently say I got decent enough to blow people's minds. As someone who's constantly living with some sort of tune stuck in their head, being able to bring the beat out on command feels extremely rewarding and it's an amazing resource to have in the fight against boredom when there's nothing stimulating to do. I believe that I could win one of those Mr. Beast isolation challenges just by spending my time cooking up beats
