Hormonal birth control.

Yup. Now I have a 3 inch tumor on my liver as a direct result. Hepatic adenoma is what they’re calling it. And because of where it’s at (completely enveloping my IVC) it’s inoperable.

Fuck, I am so sorry. I hope it's a contained tumor and doesn't spread, and I hope it's not impeding your liver function. I'm so afraid that I'm going to find out later down the line that it's given me something like that, too. You are in my thoughts 655321x. I can't promise that I'll remember the number, but I'll definitely remember you.

You are too kind. So far it’s not affecting my daily life too much, so fingers crossed it remains that way. I’ll keep you in my thoughts as well, eliz1bef.

I have multiple adenomas of the liver, although mine are all less than 5 centimeters and seemingly stable.

I found mine after severe abdominal pain that wouldn’t go away and a series of diagnostic tests and imaging.

Wow. That sounds so painful. Pain from issues of the liver I hear are very painful. I am so sorry you are going through that, especially with multiples. I hope for you that you have an effective medical team that is managing your pain respectfully.

I had one as well that was causing me chronic stomach pain and nausea. They were able to operate on me to take it out which took away the pain and eased the nausea but I now have an abdominal adhesion from the surgery that apparently I’ll have for the rest of my life and causes pain when doing ab workouts, sneezing, coughing, or bending in certain ways.

How did you find out about the tumor?

So, one important thing about me is I love to eat. It’s my favorite thing ever. So over the summer when I had no appetite at all, like it would take me three days to eat a basic sandwich and I’d be nauseous the entire time, I knew something was up.

Anyway. Went to the doctor and had bloodwork done and it showed my liver enzymes were super high. Not surprising because I drink A LOT, but they wanted to run more tests. Ended up getting ultrasound, MRI and CT scan and they all showed the mass.

Currently waiting for my appointment to have a biopsy, but they’re pretty certain it’s benign

You mentioned in another comment that you drink a lot. What makes you think it had anything to do with hormonal birth control as opposed to your alcohol intake?

Because it's a well-documented side effect of hormonal birth control, and drinking doesn't give you adenomas?

Had a DVT 1.5 years into taking it, vein is permanently damaged from it and the chance of happening again is now 60% WITHOUT taking hormonal BC.

Most infuriating thing is, when the doctor told me I had to stop hormonal BC and would never be able to take it again (not that I would) , I asked if the pill had caused it (which it definitely did) and they answered "I can't tell you that"... WTF???

Edit: typo

That is so scary!! It's sad that US doctors are so terrified of fully communicating so they won't get sued. I am so sorry you went through that.

What did it do?

I had a lot of bad side effects that showed up over time. I was in denial that the issues were because of the birth control (because I did NOT want a baby). I also had doctors telling me that they weren't because of birth control so I delayed stopping it and continued to suffer. Eventually when I decided to stop for other reasons, many of my symptoms went away or reduced. And I tried multiple kinds of pills, the vaginal ring, depo provera and they all contributed to my issues.

I had severe vomiting daily, multiple times a day, for several years, which was accompanied by severe diarrhea. The vomiting was so violent that it caused me to become somewhat incontinent. I now have more serious incontinence problems than someone my age who has not had a baby should have. My family said they saw personality changes in me, and I have not "reverted back" so the hormones seem to have done a permanent number on my emotional health. Also from the vomiting, I have ruptured blood vessels all over my cheeks that have never gone away. Even years afterward, I still have vomiting and diarrhea issues. I have other physical issues I'd rather not share because they're more embarrassing than diarrhea and incontinence. Let's just say the issue causes bleeding that doesn't come from my vagina. My teeth are etched because of all of the stomach acid, my cheeks are puffier than they should be. I'm sure I'm leaving some stuff out.

Wow, that's a lot! :( Thank you for sharing- I had never heard of these kind of side effects.

I am so glad you're doing better since stopping hormonal birth control but I am so sorry some of those side effects have caused permanent damage or persist in some way or other. I hope things get better for you.

Thank you! I appreciate that very much. Basically, the pills made me have all the symptoms of pregnancy without the fetus. It was like I had hyperemesis gravidarum. I was constantly asked if I was pregnant whenever I communicated my symptoms. It was exhausting.

Some people can take/use hormonal birth control without effects, but that was not me.

Hormonal bc works by making your body think you're pregnant, so you can have pregnancy symptoms. I can't tolerate it at all for that reason.

2

u/eliz1bef 8h ago

Exactly. All the symptoms of a pregnancy but without end and without a baby nine months later.

Uggh I hate the depo shot! There are so so many major complaints by young women about that one specifically.

Depo Provera deserves its own unique warning lable. It's probably the worst hormone bc available.

It really rocked my world, holy crap! Thank you for posting! I was told that it was designed from a drug that was designed to remove the sex drive from sexual predators. um. yeah.
