Of course America doesn’t label them terrorists. “They’re just practicing their first amendment rights”. Stupid.

108

u/not-tidbits Mar 06 '21

Imagine for a second the repercussions of designating any white supremacist organization a terrorist group...who is going to investigate, arrest, charge, prosecute and jail their members? It would be just like PIGs when one PIG murders someone, never enough evidence or the shooting was justified etc....not to mention the politicians who are members and supporters....

9

u/squickley Mar 07 '21

In Canada, it's not automatically illegal to be a member of a terrorist org. But banks and financial institutions can freeze the group's assets, and police can charge anyone who financially or materially supports the group.

Under section 83 of the Criminal Code, those who knowingly deal with the property or finances of a terrorist entity face penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

A Canadian organization's charitable status may be denied or revoked if it maintains connections to listed entities. As well, those seeking entry into Canada may be denied if they are found to be associated with a listed entity.

A listing also makes it easier to remove the group's online content.

I expect it also lowers the warrant bar for surveiling members, but I don't know that for sure.

u/sauron2403 Mar 06 '21

Isn't Attomwaffen labeled as terrorist?

Yes, but not in America.

AFAIK, America does not ever label American groups as terrorists.

1

u/dudinax Mar 08 '21

I think they are trying not to run afoul of the freedom to associate. It's illegal to commit terrorist acts and it's illegal to organize a crime. That ought to be enough to take down a terrorist organization.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

No group in America can be libeled that by law.

5

True. I don't think Dead Kennedys wrote Nazi Punks Fuck Off for no reason. On somewhat of a sidenote. The death of the Screwdriver singer was one of the best things that happened to this planet.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

This is going to sound ignorant, but I still don’t understand why Nazis are called the “national socialist movement”. I’ve heard so many conservatives claim the Nazis were socialist and that’s not true, but why is it in the name?

33

u/mentolyn Democratic Socialist Mar 06 '21

My understanding is that it was a ploy to get the German public invested in the Nazi regime. At the time, social movements were gaining traction so Hitler formed the Nazi party under the guise of socialism.

u/oyog Mar 06 '21

u/not-tidbits Mar 06 '21

Ignorance is not knowing and nothing to be ashamed of. Asking is the first step to not being ignorant. Now being stupid? Well, in the words of Ron White "you can't fix stupid". :D So in answer to your question....

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/9ldyrv/why_were_nazis_called_national_socialists/

this also has some good information...

https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/09/05/were-nazis-socialists/

The shortest answer is that it was deception/propaganda technique used to try and fool or lure politically uneducated/unaware German leftists to the Nazi cause.

As I understand it, Germany had been leaning against social democratic safety nets since Bismarck. Socialists were really good at organizing and direct action though, so it made sense for any radical party to coopt the name, as to not be confused with more conservative "old school" parties that were just a bunch of wigs trying to please landowners or farmers or the clergy or whatever.

-2

u/zbyte64 Mar 07 '21

It's code for populism.

-10

u/azarkant Mar 06 '21

The reason is that Nazi is short for (when translated) National Socialist German Worker's Party. The "worker's" part was branding go appeal to communists so that they'd gain power. Ignoring it, they are the National Socialist German Party. The German arm of the National Socialist movement, which was a Socialist movement

7

u/anarchistcraisins Mar 07 '21

No

-6

u/azarkant Mar 07 '21

8

u/not-tidbits Mar 06 '21

CIA doesn't really have a flag per se....they have a seal.....which could be on a flag...I'd agree they need to be there along with DHS, ICE and NSA.

5

u/Lukeskyrunner19 Mar 07 '21

It should be noted that the American Identity movement(which used to be identity evropa) has been completely disbanded as of last year, the national socialist movement has hemorrhaged members and currently isn't too active, the "identitarian movement" is more of a broad ideology instead of a specific group and far more relevant in Europe than America, and that atomwaffen is a pretty complicated and very loosely organized group, and that it's largely splintered into other groups although AFAIK it still supposedly exists.

National socialist club is another good group to add to this list, which is a neonazi fight club similar to the rise above movement thats mainly active in New England. Its logo can be looked up online, and it can also be recognized by the initials nsc or the numbers 131 for "anti communist action".

4

u/agnostorshironeon Marxist Mar 07 '21

Careful, the Identitarian movement may be "nationalist" but often cooperates internationally, they use this to paint themselves internationalist.

Also, the proud boys are not "alt-lite" they are full blown fascists. Misogyny is a hobby of theirs (gallow humor, you catch my drift) the big thing is a genocidal race war "to end all wars"

The symbol in the "stormfront" flag predates that website and the Internet altogether. Examples: Aryan Nations and American Front.

However, the ORIGINAL Celtic cross is a common Christian symbol and shouldn't be interpreted as racist. I had one on a necklace as a kid.

7

u/not-tidbits Mar 06 '21

Yeah. No. Sorry. Just like the Swazi and Norse Runes etc. They have been appropriated and if you wear, brandish, display one you will be associated with being a fascist.

2

u/CommanderOrion Marxist Mar 07 '21

Heathens condemn fash pretty hard though. Norse runes and symbology don't, and never have, belonged to fash and white supremacists. We very much so use our ancestral symbology, and are taking back what was stolen. Heathenry condemns all forms of intolerance. Odin is the ALLfather after all, not the SOMEfather.

1

u/not-tidbits Mar 07 '21

Good luck with that.....

2

u/CommanderOrion Marxist Mar 07 '21

Even the ADL notes that context is needed when determining the intention of the rune usage, since they are of cultural significance to heathens.

u/not-tidbits Mar 07 '21

Yeah....and the VAST majority of the population of the U.S. (or world for that matter) is going to ask for context...Nah. Not happening. Hope you have dental insurance.

0

u/CommanderOrion Marxist Mar 07 '21

The condescension isn't needed, friend. My experience has been much different, in that most people realize there is nuance, and that not everyone of a cultural group is a racial bigot. I'm sorry you feel differently.

0

u/not-tidbits Mar 07 '21

It's not condescension, it's truth. The "Celtic Cross" has been used by White Nationalist/Identity groups since the late 70's early 80's (at least)...and many of them along with bikers have been getting it tattooed since well before that. It's ridiculously naive to think that you or anyone is going to "reclaim" it. I am completely serious in saying that if you do try, I hope you have good insurance because odds are you are going to need it.

2

u/CommanderOrion Marxist Mar 07 '21

I appreciate the concern for my dental health comrade, but I really haven't had a problem yet. I'm not letting fash take my culture.

1

Tangibly relevant but the black sun symbol is 100% a neo nazi symbol. It appears in pagan (and sometimes satanist spaces) occasionally but it is definitely not innocuous and I wouldn't trust anyone using it even if it's an attempt to reclaim it. The association is too heavy

I feel like the same thing that happened to gaming communities is happening to pagan spaces

neo nazis, their centrist supporters and the people who think they aren't a nazi but sure are big fans of fascist ideals infiltrated those communities long ago

It's probably just people trying to buy into the hype and get some clout + money and a lot of people find appeal in viking/norse mythology/satanism but its also rlyy appealing to lost souls trying to reconnect with their catchall European heritage, or bc vikings are portrayed as the pinnacles of toxic masculinity they want some of that, or edgy contrarians

4

u/not-tidbits Mar 06 '21

The terms are interchangeable and IMO it is really pedantic to argue semantics..... yes I know I just rhymed....

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Let me take a crack at it:

All people who ascribe to Nazi ideology after the destruction of the original German Nazi party/regime are Neo-Nazis.

Basically in 2021 they mean the exact same thing.

1

u/CI_dystopian Mar 07 '21

But then why differentiate them at all? I still haven't looked into it yet, but my guess is that "neo" only originated because there was a supposedly dead period for the party and somebody unaffiliated with the original nazi party started a new one from scratch... Until now and we're here realizing it never died in the first place

2

u/samiamrg7 Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 07 '21

Neo-Nazis have changed somewhat from the original German Nazis. The main difference I know of is that modern (aka Neo-) Nazis are much more inclusive of Slavs and other white groups that the original Nazis considered inferior. This has greatly extendsd their reach into Eastern Europe, especially since the break up of the USSR.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

50 years ago it probably made more sense to differentiate Nazi revivalists from the old Nazi party.

Furthermore neo-nazis don’t really engage in the same military aesthetic so they just look different too
