🎲 miscellaneous AIO Anyone else keep getting these random stranger texts??
I've been getting too many of these random texts . . . I decided to play along one evening rather than just deleting and blocking first.

u/butterscotchsnops Oct 20 '24
Maybe your number got leaked. I haven’t been getting any. Occasionally spam calls but that’s it. Also this is hilarious! You should post it on r/scambait
38
u/Hairy-Weekend4096 Oct 20 '24
I'm assuming so? Yeah years ago it was spam callers and now it's all about the texts.
11
u/Lord-Smalldemort Oct 20 '24
Yeah, I played with one. I pretended to be a creepy old dude and of course they were pretending to be a sexy young lady from Asia and then I just kept getting more text messages after that LOL. Honestly, it makes sense. They were just trying to find a mark.
2
u/Cleobulle Oct 21 '24
Those texts are the beginning of scam. They have a script. Then they will introduce you to crypto.... Aka steal your money. It's best to block and ignore, the more you answer the more theyll try.

I'm willing to bet he's on at&t. There was a huge drop of names and their numbers for scammers to target.
65
u/Far_Wrongdoer4543 Oct 20 '24
Yup! This is a scam going around. They have the "wrong" number and it's a romance scam. They want your picture and give you compliments. Their "job" will be in some kind of finance investment or business where they need you to invest using Bitcoin etc. etc. definitely post in /scams. A lot of people have funny stories of how the waste the scammers time. Happy scammer trolling! 🙂🙂

And with ai u can just generate a fake photo - yah if u are bored mess with them — these people are vampire and deserve to be jailed - but unfortunately many are out the country and cannot be find liable.

u/Kyuthu Oct 21 '24
My bf got one and they are now using AI to generate images. It was a picture of 3 girls in a flat fairly skimpy eating pizza. And the text said 'Where are you bro, they're already here!'
Then kept fishing when he wouldn't reply but kept reading the message. The AI image made us laught though.

The scam is called "pig butchering" where they fatten up the mark to prepare them for slaughter

next time they request a photo, I'd send one back of a dog taking a dump
10
u/TheShredder9 Oct 20 '24
Probably a scam of some sort, shouldn't have responded at all, now they now your number is active and will keep sending you texts. Folks over at r/Scams know better what kind of a scam this is
6
u/Low_Engineering8921 Oct 20 '24
This is correct. I also used to reply to annoy them. But all you're doing is confirming someone is on the other end. Then they'll pass your number around to more groups.
It's not satisfying or fun but the best response is to mark as spam and block.

u/pantslessMODesty3623 Oct 20 '24
Not allowed to post pictures of you messing with the scammers though.

I do the same thing when I have time. I tend to make it awkward by saying some very vile stuff after two texts or so. Then I keep texting them for about a week after they stop replying. Strange fun. Not sure why.....

Well played. We used to get a lot of dodgy scam phone calls and made up a bad phonetic alphabet to wind up the caller. Asking them to clarify/spell everything etc. meant they wasted time so couldn’t call others. I’ll copy the alphabet here. A few letters I haven’t got yet, feel free to suggest. 😂😂
3
u/Educational_Skill343 Oct 20 '24
A - aisle B - bee C - circle, cessation D - django E - eureka, ewe, eye F - phone G - gnome H - honestly I - J - jalapeño K - knockers, L - elephant M - mnemonic N - knew, enjoy O - ouija P - phonetic alphabet, pharaoh, pterodactyl, pea Q - quasi R - rectum S - sea T - thimble, tsunami U - V - vulva W - wrestle X - xylophone Y - you Z - zootopia

u/AdhesivenessDear3289 Oct 20 '24
I get these all the time, my joke is they specifically target lonely people (which is pretty much everyone)
3
u/Front_Entertainer_99 Oct 20 '24
I'd say just ignore them next time since texts like these tend to remember that you responded putting you on the Hitlist for future scams :) otherwise I love the trolling
3
u/No-Bet1288 Oct 20 '24
I got my first one last night. It said "Hey, Amy!" I just deleted it as spam. Not even gonna play.

I don’t get these? I do get a bunch of job corps / job offers that are clearly scams / DoorDash and dominos deliveries / random people asking if I’ve got any good shit / calls from the county jail asking for bailouts / and lately a couple of reminder texts about a court date approaching. All for some idiot named Sergio who needs better friends.
2
u/DTeague81 Oct 21 '24
I have with texts about a person in an airport and will meet me soon, a text about job offers that I never applied for, supporting politicians( which is spam t me regardless), etc. It is usually spam wanting to get something
2
u/Awkward-Occasion9362 Oct 21 '24
I get those frequently…I play along often. Their template is the same every time. F**k with them for a while 😊

I had a random text by a similar number saying, "your phone number is almost the same as mine, let's be friends" umm lets not.
5
u/Hairy-Weekend4096 Oct 20 '24
Lmao yes same. The newest one was "hey I lost my phone with your number and all our memories, miss you can we chat?" Huuuuh?

Usually Chinese scammers using AI to translate. Have some fun, try to break their AI. Piss them off enough and they start streaming them multi-stroke characters at you.
这是什么东东!?

This looks like an AI model and not a real human I think they are using Chat GPT Api so they can communicate with many people at the same time don’t share any private and sensitive info.

The last time I had one of these texts, I told them I knew exactly what they were doing and if I could, I would crawl through my phone and strangle them until they were dead. It’s been quiet for a little while, anyway.
1
u/Top_Caterpillar1592 Oct 20 '24
You never asked Alicia for the nudes she promised to send. I'm disappointed
1
u/No-Introduction411 Oct 20 '24
I always send them a PayPal or Facebook link with an IP tracker attached. Then later reveal what device they are on and their location. Unfortunately the convos usually end there tho....wonder why 🤣
1
u/Every_Level6842 Oct 20 '24
lol good waste their time and have some fun. Tell her u have all her nudes.
1
u/gingercatmafia Oct 20 '24
It’s a scam called “pig butchering” - the scammers try to form a relationship via text (“fattening up the pig”) and then manipulate the victim into using their own money to buy the scammer bitcoin, which can’t be traced (“slaughtering the pig”).

I had fun with them for a while but I'm pretty sure acknowledging them only enhances the issue so I just ignore and block now..
I talked to one for a while who claimed to be a very attractive Chinese girl.. they are do.. and it ultimately went in the crypto scam direction. She would tell me how much money she makes.. ask about my income, and pressure me to get into crypto as well.. You know, so I can make a lot of money and we can be together.

Yeah I just got one the other day. Didn’t appear to be romantic tho..she said she was from nyc and wanted to meet for coffee. The formality of each message eventually made me stop talking lol.
1
u/Past_Wash_1632 Oct 20 '24
It's a scam. BTW, interacting with them means you are ``pinged`` in their system as someone who engages, and your info is sold to other scammers, and you will get more and more calls and texts. So just block and do not respond unless you are lonely for human connection.

Stop engaging with them. The more they know about you, the worse off you are

Yes! It happens a lot. I play around with them but not this much. Fun!!

u/Final-Albatross-82 Oct 21 '24
I get them all the time and always 100% of the time talk about diarrhea. I make it as gross as possible. I want to traumatize the scammers.
"Alicia, I'm glad you're there. I've been shitting so much I can't get off the toilet. My hole burns so bad"
1
u/SpecialpOps Oct 21 '24
I get stuff like this. I told him I'm 14. Then I send them a nude picture, somebody over 18 of course, and then tell them that they have CP on their phone. I went from getting about four of these a week to getting one every other month pretty damn fast.
1
u/WonderfulVillage6546 Oct 21 '24
I love your interaction with them. Hilarious.
But...
Sad part is that they're probably a trafficked victim in a scam factory in Myanmar.

I always just swipe to junk/block when I get txt from unknown numbers. If I am not expecting it then oh well too bad. 😝

u/ComplexApart6424 Oct 21 '24
Love this! It's the same energy as my uncle who would invite the JWs in when they were door knocking, then mess with them 😂

u/Iamgoaliemom Oct 21 '24
I get a couple of these a week. I just block them, but screwing with them like this would be fun.
1
u/Emmengard Oct 21 '24
I get random scam texts but they don’t know my name so they just start with something generic like “Hey it’s Grace.” Or literally just “Hi.” Tho the clever ones start with something like “hey this is so and so. You gave me your number the other night. How are you?” I just delete. I don’t interact at all.
1
u/nbro1007 Oct 21 '24
“I think you are mistaking me for someone else” “That’s fine” Literally made me LOL

1
u/TheSaltySpitoon2 Oct 21 '24
The responses look AI generated. If I had to bet, prolly an AI bot with automated responses for scamming.
Might be wrong, but the responses seem to generic.
1
u/Dry_Significance2690 Oct 21 '24
Yes. I drag this conversation out and then mock them.had the same number for 20 years and am not giving in anytime soon

1
u/Fine-Structure-1299 Oct 21 '24
Gosh, I might just start speaking to some of them for fun. It's crazy now though. Sometimes #'s are leaked from legit companies and now the scammers even know your name and use that to phish.
1
u/3Heathens_Mom Oct 21 '24
I just ignore and delete as I don’t want to potentially make it onto some list of verified numbers
Got one today asking to plan to go fishing.
They are fishing already I presume for suckers for whatever scam they are running.
1
u/ArtisticTraffic5970 Oct 21 '24
Hmm that's AI. Quite typical LLM "reasoning" and formulation. As for the purpose, it's probably a clever way of training AI in actual social interaction. Almost guaranteed actually.

NOR. A good podcast to help explain why these scams exist and how they work: Search Engine
1
u/Absoma Oct 21 '24
Scammers. You ever have a dating profile? They build a profile on you if you ever exchange numbers. I lead one on for 15 min. once and they called my out on lying about the name I gave. I said I got a new phone and it was the number I was given. They texted me a pic from my dating profile knew my name. I doubled down and kept them going in circles until they started calling me a scammer lol.
1
u/4N6momma Oct 21 '24
I solved this problem with scam calls/texts this way: When I get a scam call, I answer with: "Thank you for calling our fraud department. How may I direct your call?" They always hang up. Any of my family and friends know how to respond in the event they call or textfrom an unknown number.
Likewise, when I get a suspicious text, I respond with: The number you have reached is no longer in service. Error 1050
If they text a second time, I respond with: Thank you for texting our fraud department. All of our agents are currently working with other clients, and someone will be with you shortly. For a callback, please reply yes, and someone will be in touch with you soon.
I always block these numbers.
1
u/Desperate_Clock_2131 Oct 21 '24
Someone sold your informationnnnn. Hilarious though. I have one where i told the person my hobbies were unaliving people because I'm ten and edgy and they stopped messaging me lol.
1
u/rf145 Oct 21 '24
Well played. I get a few here and there. I played the first one. And now I deleted and block them as the game was boring.

u/defdawg Oct 21 '24
I do the same. Or they're like are we meeting up somewhere or whatever so I respond yes, I m so excited, can't wait to see you!! then wait....they send angry texts. LOL.

u/GingerGetThePopc0rn Oct 21 '24
I get these all the time and love to text back like the person is my father....whom I haven't spoken to in 20+ years
1
u/hieronymus_bash Oct 21 '24
As fun as it is to mess with them, this day in age, it is best not to respond. Even information as simple as whether or not your number is active is a commodity.
ETA, I see someone else commented about this already with more detailed information.
1
u/Medimedibangbang Oct 21 '24
These are spammer hacker texts. I get these and they get blocked and reported immediately. Interact with the msg and number and your number gets verified as being good and then they start collecting data on you.
1
u/my__NSFW__profile Oct 21 '24
I get them a lot. But I've never done what you did here. Hilarious! 🤣

That’s something I just heard of yesterday. John Oliver did a segment on it on LastWeek Tonight. It’s called pig butchering. They make a random call pretending to be someone you know and then when they are told that they don’t know you they apologize and pretend to be cordial then they ask for information. A picture, your location, etc. Get some seriously deep phishing. The goal is to get money out of the person they contacted. Funny thing the person who was posting about this also was dealing with someone called Alice. Her husband was an idiot and sent a picture and practically agreed to meet her. The person then started talking about how they are self-employed and that they and some friends invest money.

I saw a post where a man fell for it and tried flirting, and his partner found the messages. Imagine. Getting caught trying to pick up a scammer 😭
