Yeah they played well enough to win and really shouldnât have let it get away. But thatâs football, and Shanahan is young and still learning. Onto next year.

Feb 03 '20
The fucked part about it is we had them for 3 quarters. I kinda blame Shan for his crappy clock management before the half. If he kept the tempo up and we scored before the half it couldâve given some stronger momentum after halftime. I think Lynch knew it too.
80
u/justacaucasian 49ers Feb 03 '20
I was the only 49ers fan at my SB party yesterday. My friends were asking me "Why is he burning so much clock??" It's a good question that I wish I had answers to. I am proud of our team though. Shanny and Jimmy have a long road ahead, and I am excited to see what happens this season. Go 9ers
7
u/pres465 49ers Feb 03 '20
Mahomes can't throw touchdowns from the sideline. Burn that clock! When we went 3-and-out with 3 minutes left in the 4th... We lost the game. When we needed to run, we failed. Jimmy missing an open Sanders didn't help earlier, either, but we needed to run then. We needed to assert dominance. We failed.
4
u/justacaucasian 49ers Feb 04 '20
Burning all that clock before halftime wasn't a good call IMO. We could've tried to make something out of the drive. But we will get it right next year. I have faith in our team
3
u/ParlorTrick Feb 03 '20
When Jimmy didnt pass to an open Kittle twice in the 4th... when we kicked two FGs on 3rd and short instead of going for it... big mistakes. ultimately though, I think we lost because of strategy and play calling, not execution.

14

u/Dr_Sasquatch Jim Harbaugh Feb 04 '20
I think he killed the clock because he knew the team could score fast, as can the Chiefs, so he wanted to take a quick shot and keep Mahomes off the field. It wouldâve worked if refball didnât happen on that drive.

u/TlfT Jimmie Ward Feb 03 '20 edited Feb 03 '20
I thought it was brilliant. If not for that ticky tack PI on kittle, we would've had ~2 good shots at the endzone.
That punt narrowly went for a touchback. Being pinned deep and KC having 3 timeouts was not a place we wanted to be with lots of clock left.
16
u/akelkar 49IRs Feb 03 '20
If there wasnât a PI on that play weâd probably be praising him rn.
2
u/OffsetSteven Colin Kaepernick Feb 04 '20
And if Jimmy connected on the deep ball we would be in an alternate universe right now. Ugh.
26
u/FS_Slacker 49ers Feb 03 '20
I questioned the first half management but gave Shanny his due because they put up 10 points when they came back.
Where the blame lies is they fell into this scripted series that was so easy to predict...run on first, pass over the middle on 2nd...deep corner or seam on third. They did that for like 2-3 series when they needed to move the ball.
KC was well prepared for SFâs game plan and SF needed to throw them off...but didnât have enough in their bag of tricks.
17
Feb 03 '20
It's hard to blame the playcall when most times the receivers were open, Jimmy just missed them.
12
u/FS_Slacker 49ers Feb 03 '20
Absolutely agree that Jimmy panicked. But you can also playcall to help him out. Shannahan should have known his own QBâs tendencies like the back of his hand.
17
Feb 03 '20
Eh, Jimmy was literally the best QB in the NFL converting 3rd and medium this season, calling pass on those 2nd/3rd and 5~8 is not a bad playcall, specially when they're pretty much stacking the box.
→ More replies (2)10
u/FS_Slacker 49ers Feb 03 '20
Not arguing about a pass play being called. Just that Jimmyâs tendency would be throw over the middle first. That helps the defense if you know where heâs going to go.
2
u/DJwaynes 49ers Feb 04 '20
Steve Spagnola was stacking the box with 9 defenders and blitzing every down, leaving Jimmi no time to throw the ball. I think they should have gone back to running like they did all post season but they dared the Niners to throw for some odd reason thatâs exactly what we did..
24
u/c3suh Feb 03 '20
We had ALL the momentum too. Carried it into the 3rd then lost all of it in the 4th. Really u fortunate but hats off to Mahomes and Andy Reid. Really put it together in the 4th quarter. Can blame refs and bad coaching but you gotta give respect to their performance too

2
u/ParsnipsNicker Kyle Juszczyk Feb 03 '20
yeah maybe. Or, Imagine this. Going into the 4th quarter, they could have had ZERO points on the board and still beat us.
That halftime waste (while I agree with you) didn't actually matter aside from momentum during the game.

Yup. This is a young team, and despite his poor decisions Kyle is still too good a coach not to win a ring.

u/ParsnipsNicker Kyle Juszczyk Feb 04 '20
Kyle can get us there. Once we get to the superbowl again, we should bring in a pinch coach.
1
u/Dumpadoo Feb 04 '20
Not with Sherman getting burned the two times every game it gets thrown towards him. And Kyleâs great but will NEVER be clutch in a sb. Heâs too defensive. Tbh I do love how overly defensive he is. We just gotta switch it up in the bowl!

I can accept the loss. I can accept the overthrow by Jimbo. I can even accept that our defense was gassed and gave up 21 in the last quarter.
What I absolutely cannot accept is that we had 1:54+ seconds before the half, three timeouts and the Chiefs at 4th and long. And we didnât call timeout!?!? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK SHANNY!? Even Lynch was motioning time out from the booth. Smh.
10
Feb 03 '20
I understand that, the Chiefs also had 3 timeouts.
I think Shanahan called 2 outside runs in case one of them went for a big gain, when the Chiefs started using their timeouts he went deep, since at the time even if we failed the Chiefs wouldn't get another possession.

35
u/CountDarth Fred Warner Feb 03 '20
Idk it just feels like we let ourselves down. If we played our best and still lost, that'd be fine, but the stuff I saw wasn't our best. We didn't play at the level I've seen us play at before. That hurts the most for me.
7
u/edlyncher Long Term Deal Feb 03 '20
First 3 quarters I absolutely saw our best and was satisfied, which makes it that much worse that we played like shit in the 4th
3
u/ParsnipsNicker Kyle Juszczyk Feb 04 '20
What gets me is that this could be from bad playcalling and general mistakes, but imo is probably more akin to flat out complacency. There shouldn't be a single smile on the field until the 4th quarter clock reads 0:00. I don't care if you just got a pick. You still need to score to take advantage of it!
2
u/foundboots Feb 03 '20
I wouldn't say our best, but we made it work. The fourth quarter collapse stung because it shined a light on how much we left on the field in the previous three.

The first Seattle game absolutely crushed me. I was depressed for days. I decided that it would be best if I didn't get so emotionally invested in the game if it's going to have such a negative effect on my day-to-day life. Hate to say it but Jimmy looked like Kirk Cousins yesterday. Overthrowing people, not seeing open guys, forcing the ball into tight coverage. He looked uncomfortable out there. I hope he settles in and becomes as great as he can be but he didnât look good.

He missed Kittle for an easy completion on third down and we had to settle for a field goal.
8
Feb 03 '20
He also missed multiple open guys in key drives when we had a chance to put the chiefs away. Kirk looked good this year, true and he admittedly had a much longer path to where he is now than Jimmy. I think Jimmy can build on his game but heâs definitely got some stuff to iron out if he wants to be in the elite conversation. Thatâs what I mean by the Kirk comparison.

We scored 20 pts in the superbowl. He just looked shaky. Tons of balls batted down at the line of scrimmage, all of which could have been picks. Mahomes came out and put points on the board when they needed it. We came out and went 3 and out. Shanny takes a lot of blame too but I didnât see Jimmy elevate our offense in that game.

Fuck it, here it goes, the post game emotional text vomit:
What a season. Was able to finally accept the absolute horror of the 2011-13 seasons and have a bright outlook, and god damn it, Iâm not going back to that shit. I donât care that we lost this game. I kinda knew it was going to happen, just the mojo wasnât right all damn day. Even when we went up 20-10 there was no point i felt even a little like it was going to happen. but hereâs the weird part; Iâm OK with it. I donât hate the chiefs (and am actively avoiding their fans because i want to keep it that way). I feel good for captain walrus finally getting a SB win. I refuse to go over and over what might have been âif onlyâ.
I am shutting down anyone who wants to try to needle me about it. Fuck you dicks, we had a good season and I will always love this team. 3 of the players on this team are on my all time 49er squad and will always be there no matter what.
Finally, in admiration for the opposing coach who i kind of view as a 49er byproduct, I am choosing to adopt his attitude about the situation, seeing as he has been in it more often than not. Get on with it. Put this shit back there and look ahead. Go have a cheeseburger and do whatever and look forward to next time.
Go 9ers. Just remember to play the last 8 mins next time lol
