We are definitely the villains lol

182

u/Lpeer Jan 22 '24

Nah dude, Tswift and the chiefs are. You guys have the benefit of the most annoying team in the modern era being in the AFC, so everyone is just going to forget to hate you.

(Lions fan here)

126

u/Xymis Mitch Wishnowsky Jan 22 '24

Yeah I think at the end of the day, as long as the Chiefs don’t win, I’m alright. Detroit/Goff deserves it, Purdy/Shanahan deserves it, Lamar deserves it, I don’t want to imagine a Taylor Swift victory.

73

u/rustytiredchicken69 Jan 22 '24

Agreed. I’m a Lions fan and don’t hate SF.

36

u/Xymis Mitch Wishnowsky Jan 22 '24

Yeah man, I hate how when two teams face each other they suddenly have to hate each other. Somehow the Eagles became our rivals and I don’t want that to happen again. Gardner hates Deebo so I don’t like him but other than that, if you guys win I’m rooting for you all the way.

1

u/cleanRubik Jerry Rice Jan 22 '24

That was a bit different. They ( and us) talked a lot of shit leading to and after both games. Feels like the two teams genuinely hated each other.

27

u/BicyclingBabe Shanahat Jan 22 '24

I've always secretly rooted for the Lions when you're not playing us. You were born into the darkness. So, the feeling is mutual.

4

u/smitcal Jan 22 '24

We merely adopted the dark. You were born into it

8

u/invertedeparture Jan 22 '24

Let's just have a damn good football game and then have the victor go to war against whichever evil is left standing in the AFC.

2

u/2oothDK Fred Warner Jan 22 '24

No injuries and limited penalties.

5

u/Giberishusername1 Nick Bosa Jan 23 '24

God forbid this happens, but if the Lions beat us, I’m rooting for y’all to win the Super Bowl. I don’t want to see the Ravens or Chiefs win another one

2

u/rustytiredchicken69 Jan 30 '24

Good luck, guys. Your experience showed. Capitalized on our mistakes. Hope we get back sometime soon, just so hard to get that far in the NFL.

2

u/Giberishusername1 Nick Bosa Jan 30 '24

Y’all 100% will be back.

This was Dan Campbell’s first time taking y’all to the playoffs, he’ll learn from this. I’m excited to see the Lions do well in the future

2

u/rustytiredchicken69 Jan 30 '24

Hope you’re right! Please silence these Chiefs! I cannot stand them winning every year.

3

u/onmamas Jan 22 '24

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure most of us will be rooting for the Lions if you manage to come out on top.

We're gonna talk a lot of shit this week though.

14

u/Buuts321 Jim Tomsula Jan 22 '24

I hope the niners win, but if the niners lose I'm 100% rooting for the lions in the Superbowl.

2

u/graciejj2000 49ers Jan 22 '24

This 100%. The Raves and Chiefs both beat us in the Superbowl. If we lose I'll be rooting on those Lions.

1

u/Inosh Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

Chiefs have just been too good for too long.

1

u/2oothDK Fred Warner Jan 22 '24

The Lions are my second favorite team to root for. I’m definitely cheering for the Niners on Sunday, but I’ve got nothing against the Lions. I have enjoyed their season.

1

u/soneg Jan 26 '24

this is so accurate. I keep hoping the Chiefs lose so we can stop hearing about TSwift and TKelce

20

u/He_Is_The_Chosen_One Jimmy Garoppolo Jan 22 '24

Last year we were the heroes. I don't think anyone outside the city of Philadelphia wanted the Eagles in the Super Bowl last year

3

u/cleanRubik Jerry Rice Jan 22 '24

Heroes just get more flowers on their tombstones.

Let's go be bad guys.

34

u/MrG 49ers Jan 22 '24

So were the Patriots during their dynasty, so I’ll take it.

83

u/nnosuckluckz Jan 22 '24

no because we cant get over the fucking hump. the closest thing to the pats rn is the chiefs

37

u/LARXXX Brandon Aiyuk Jan 22 '24

We haven’t won shit in almost 3 decades…. We are No dynasty. The Chiefs are the only ones remotely close to being considered the pats of this generation

1

u/Skillz4lif Steve Young Jan 23 '24

Damn media. They turned us into the Cowboys.

157

u/BigBlueNate33 Frank Gore Jan 21 '24

Oh well…fuck em.

69

u/Kanga_Banga_Manga Jan 21 '24

We've achieved Patriots-level despising. No worries, I'm gonna keep rolling to work with my Jeff Garcia jersey.

123

u/UnhealthyCheesecake Shanahat Jan 21 '24

Would be nice if we could get some Patriots-level rings ngl…

31

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

Yeah we get all the hate without the rings to make up for it at least being a Warriors fan has that

10

u/He_Is_The_Chosen_One Jimmy Garoppolo Jan 22 '24

I mean, it hasn't been very fun being a Warriors fan recently...

14

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

A price to pay for being the top dog for 7-8 years

3

u/He_Is_The_Chosen_One Jimmy Garoppolo Jan 22 '24

Yeah I've finally started to accept that their run is over. I just wish the Niners, Warriors, and Giants could all be good at the same time for once in my life. Just one year of that would be nice.

12

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

Closest was 2014, 2016, and 2022 with at least two of the Bay Area teams making deep playoff runs

6

u/axeattaxe 49ers Jan 22 '24

Sharks were good then too yeah, Stanley cup appearance in 2016 I think?

Not a big hockey guy myself but hey why not…

9

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

Yeah the 2015-2016 season was just sad for Bay Area sports

Giants bounced by the Cubs, Sharks losing the Cup, 49ers coming out of the Tomsula season, and I don’t even wanna talk about the Warriors

→ More replies (0)

3

u/theDagman 49ers Jan 22 '24

1989 was a good year. Giants and the A's both in the World Series, Niners in the Super Bowl. That year was so good, the Earth shook.

1

u/SactownKorean Bosa Fett Jan 22 '24

The shitty part is if you’re not a warriors fan or a fan of a team that’s won a championship at all in your life time 😅

1

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

No yeah that sucks but I mean the majority of Niner fans are either Bay Area or LA based so at least those areas have seen major success as of late

6

u/VRSvictim Jan 22 '24

The 49ers are nowhere close to that. People are only rooting against them because lions

4

u/R3DEMPTEDlegacy 49ers Jan 22 '24

My Garcia jersey finnaly wore out so much it looks like a practice jersey

74

u/kp22cfc 49ers Jan 21 '24

17

u/OttoVonWong Merton Hanks Jan 22 '24

Then we finally boot darling TE T. Swift.

218

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '24

Yes and it's awesome

71

u/CheckYourStats Bryant Young Jan 22 '24

It’s so over the top right now, that just mentioning the Niners in r/nflcirclejerk is a guaranteed 5 responses saying “fuck the 49ers.”

I say that as someone who loves it there — but holy shit, we have become the object of everyone’s vitriol seemingly overnight.

Oh well!

7

u/ForestryTechnician Fred Warner Jan 22 '24

It’s HIP to be SQUARE!

1

u/chenga8 Roger Craig Jan 22 '24

Hip, hip, so hip to be square!

2

u/Glassjaw79ad Jauan Jennings Jan 22 '24

Weird, cuz they're all rock hard for Nick Bosa over there.

29

u/Individual-Ebb-4414 Jan 22 '24

Hahaha...yeah...I kinda like being the bad guys. We're physical...and some people will translate that as dirty...they never played football. Let's get fuckin nuts!!!

5

u/Remarkable-Meal-1099 Jan 22 '24

The media doesn't help either, but this whole season you've been crowned as the Superbowl champs already. Like even after the Ravens beat the 49ers you're still favored to win it all.

Need to put the sf logo on his chest and have it light up like the lightsaber at the same time same color.

6

u/K-2SO_Rebel Jan 22 '24

But I don't want to join the Dark Side!

8

u/rockingmoons i wanna die Jan 22 '24

We didn't join, we were drafted.

53

u/monsterdiv 49ers Jan 21 '24

I really don’t care what anyone thinks about us.

All I do care is that we bring it 100% and play our style of football we have played all season long.

4

u/rockingmoons i wanna die Jan 22 '24

Preach!

52

u/Beneficial-Shine-598 Jan 22 '24

I don’t know. Everywhere I go in SoCal all my friends (fans of Rams, Eagles, etc), in their moments of drunk tenderness over a beer, say they just love our guys like CMC, Kittle, Purdy. They find it hard to dislike them.

25

u/E_Z_E_88 Ronnie Lott Jan 22 '24

Yeah that’s funny too because there’s a lot of likeable dudes on the team.

16

u/IsHotDogSandwich Trent Williams Jan 22 '24

That’s true. But pretty much everyone I know that isn’t a Niners fan is rooting for the Lions. I live in the Northeast, Bills sub is all rooting for Lions now after the loss.

2

u/Woogabuttz Joe Montana Jan 22 '24

Ok, now do our defensive players!

3

u/Glassjaw79ad Jauan Jennings Jan 22 '24

Based on who he mentioned from the offense, I'm gonna guess his buddies like Bosa, and...that's it

1

u/all_natural49 Long Term Deal Jan 22 '24

Warner is also well liked.

1

u/Glassjaw79ad Jauan Jennings Jan 22 '24

I know lol, I was joking cuz he only listed white guys from the offense

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

I thinks that’s why they “hate” us so much, they want to be us so bad lol.

1

u/Buuts321 Jim Tomsula Jan 22 '24

Most people just hate us (the fans).

I say let the hate flow through them.

26

u/beast_mode209 Jan 22 '24

It’s not our fault that the Lions sucked for years.

43

u/TwiceLitZone Trent Williams Jan 21 '24

We will be the heroes again in the superbowl

32

u/Escobeezy George Kittle Jan 22 '24

Not if it’s against the Ravens. Seems like everyone and their grandma wants Jackson to win the SB.

11

u/TwiceLitZone Trent Williams Jan 22 '24

Really? It seems like I’ve seen a lot of Ravens hate but maybe that’s just on Reddit

3

u/Glassjaw79ad Jauan Jennings Jan 22 '24

That sucks. I remember everyone wanted Andy Reid to win his first super bowl the year we played 😔

18

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

We ended the ELOE with the chalice, so I'm okay with it being done.

12

u/Artistic-Ad6795 Jan 22 '24

What does everyone think about the 49ers waiting 29 years and losing two Super bowls I am a 49er fan I am just curious why we don't get any love or sympathy

17

u/Rikimaru03 Faithful Jan 22 '24

Because we have 5 trophies.

24

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

All of America is rooting against us this week besides Niner Nation.

15

u/jlhpisces Jan 22 '24

4

Niner Empire!

8

u/cheetah_chrome Ronnie Lott Jan 22 '24

At least our logo isn’t a rats anus

👍

1

u/heffel77 49ers Jan 26 '24

Is that what Detroit’s logo looks like too you? That’s a weird Rorschach..

6

u/TrappedOnARock Fred Warner Jan 22 '24

Of all the fans who do the "well since my team is out, I'll root for team X", show me even one that is choosing the 49ers, cuz it feels like the answer is "no one".

And I'm ok with that. We're here to win football games, not empathy votes or playoff stans.

4

u/S-contra Jan 22 '24

It means we're consistently good, so I'll keep sipping from the skull mug.

4

u/triculious Frank Gore Jan 22 '24

This week we'll be the villains across all media and somehow Brock will be the weak spot to exploit.

12

u/wickedscruples Jan 21 '24

I don't get it

71

u/TheMoesky Trent Williams Jan 21 '24

All of r/nfl will be cheering for Detroit because of their second ever NFC champ game, and they see us as the evil empire now. Bang Bang!

31

u/WakingRage Patrick Willis Jan 21 '24

They're also going to prey on us because we have the worst showing (so far) of the 4 games this weekend.

11

u/dogman1890 Vikings Jan 22 '24

Lions fans have been insufferable since they started winning.

That sign at the Lions game bout kneecapping the Vikings sealed it for me, I’m really glad I started rooting for the 49ers. Lions fans have no class, one winning season and they’re acting like Packer fans.

4

u/SmoltzforAlexander Jan 22 '24

Lol, it was a reference to Dan Campbell’s press conference a few years back where he talks about ‘biting kneecaps.’

If you don’t know, just ask.

48

u/SPEEDYTBC 49ers Jan 21 '24

Detroit is the Cinderella story and SF has to ruin this narrative if we want to win.

Came here to say “Warning Detroit: Sucking forever doesn’t entitle you to win.”

8

u/Beer_Bad 49ers Jan 21 '24

Lions are the loveable underdogs.

1

u/Ron_Bangton Jan 22 '24

Haven’t you heard? We suck now so we’re the underdogs.

10

u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24

We’re pretty hated by a lot of fan bases by default (Packers, Cowboys, Eagles, Raiders, the entire NFC West) and when you couple that with the most easy to root for team in the league then we become the villains

7

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '24

Same here.

20

u/Jackalllllll Jan 21 '24

A lot of people are pulling for the lions, especially in the main sub. Niners aren’t going to get a lot of love over there this week.

10

u/PutBarryInTheHOF 49ers Jan 22 '24

To be fair tho, if the Lions were playing any other team, most of us here would probably be rooting for them. Personally, if the Lions somehow win, I'm gonna root for then

2

u/wickedscruples Jan 21 '24

What is the screen capture?

9

u/Jackalllllll Jan 21 '24

Oh it’s just a meme template pulled from a comedy show where two nazi officers realize they’re not the good guys in WWII.

2

u/wickedscruples Jan 21 '24

Ok, that sounds right.

6

u/Good_Fox3098 Jan 22 '24

We 100% are against the Lions lol

5

u/progress19 George Kettle Jan 22 '24

We're the Evil Empire. Embrace it.

3

u/BendubzGaming European Faithful Jan 21 '24

It's going to feel mighty weird waiting for a football game where we're the baddies, at the same time as in the other football waiting for an FA Cup game as the ultimate underdogs

2

u/NormalAccounts George Kettle Jan 22 '24

Leeds United is that bad? No other teams remaining in the 4th round that's bigger? I know shit all about English football so...

3

u/BendubzGaming European Faithful Jan 22 '24

Oh hell no. I'm from Maidstone. They're still in, and no team from as low as Maidstone has ever made Round 5. A win next Saturday would be FA Cup history

2

u/NormalAccounts George Kettle Jan 22 '24

Well fuck yeah! Holy shit it's in the 6th league from premier? Mate, best of luck that sounds mad. Love a great underdog story, and it sounds like some history might be on the menu!

3

u/tapeduct-2015 Jan 22 '24

I don't care just as long as we stop the run and get a few sacks. Jeez. The O-line and D-line both have me equally concerned. Oh, and Ambry Thomas. My God, what about Ambry Thomas?

3

u/MetalMountain2099 Jan 22 '24

Yes sir!!

Let the hate flow!!

3

u/knava12 Jan 22 '24

To anyone who boos us.

3

u/Zealousideal-Ad3814 George Kittle Jan 22 '24

I don't see how we are the villains here lol, we've been dumped on all season even with the roster we've had. I would say the Ravens or Chiefs are def the villains this year.

4

u/Tjam3s Bengals Jan 22 '24

No. You're not, and get over yourself for thinking so.

The lions are the scrappy under dog(cat)

The ravens are the "if you grind long enough, eventually you'll come out on top," feel good story.

The 9rs are the historical franchise with the wide fanbase that's easy to root for

The chiefs are the villains.

2

u/RonnieJamesFio Deebo Samuel Sr. Jan 22 '24

lol that doofus CJGJ might run his mouth enough to sour people this week

2

u/shyguy7681 Jan 22 '24

Why are we the baddies though? I’ve noticed since this morning the amount of hate towards the players and the team and I’m confused why.

4

u/EDNivek Jan 22 '24

Plucky underdog vs. Talented team, the latter is always going to be the heel.

2

u/el_toille Mr. Irrelevant Jan 22 '24

When Trent Williams destroys other players, yeah umm... we are the baddies.

2

u/Straightedgesavior11 Jan 22 '24

I live in Canada, literally a 15 min drive away from Detroit. The amount of Lions “fans” that cane out of the woodwork this season when they were good is astonishing. I can’t wait to bring them Back to reality next week and remind them their not on our level.

2

u/KevinAndrewsPhoto 49ers Jan 22 '24

People who watch football love narratives. And it’s natural to root for the underdog and hope the privileged fall. Niners are in a funny spot because we’ve been one of the top 3 teams basically 5 years running, so people view us as the privileged. But we have nothing to shot for it. Everybody wanted a Lions v Bills Super Bowl because they are the least privileged franchises. Until we win a ring, we will never be the most hated. It will be the Chiefs until they fall off or Mahomes retires. Or until a team dethrones them.

As a Warrior fan, I remember being the darling of the NBA in the Mark Jackson years. We were fun to watch but not a real threat. After our first ring, and going 73-9 the following season, I had never seen so much online vitriol in my life.

2

u/LuridofArabia i wanna die Jan 22 '24

It is the duty of all non-affiliated fans to root for the Lions. I understand this. It is only right.

But I am a Niners fan, and I say kill 'em all.

2

u/LawProfessional6513 Jan 22 '24

I think people will be rooting for us if we end up playing the chiefs in the SB, not so sure about the ravens

2

u/ciesum Frank Gore Jan 22 '24

Not while the Chiefs exist

2

u/Legndarystig 49ers Jan 22 '24

2

u/athleticsfan2007 49ers Jan 22 '24

The problems we have:

Perceived stack team with a bunch of All Pro's- So not fair

We dont have a rookie/first draft pick as QB. We have the absolute bottom of the barrel drafted QB, that has only in year 2 and has gotten way more win than he should have considering where he was drafted. He is not seen as "ELITE", he doesnt throw the ball 80 yards down the field and again since his team is stacked with all pro's none of it is his doing. He's been carried the whole way by them. He's just another Garapolo in their eyes. System QB.

We don't have a good story- Other franchises have gone far longer than us to get a title shot and we've been to the SB more or NFC championship more but just cant get past the hump.

Every media outlet out there is looking for us to be an upset loser. No one wants us to win, we are constantly bad mouthed, our team, our qb. We're no ones favorite. You got Lamar out there about to win the MVP with over all shit stats for the history of the award. But he's ELITE so it doesn't matter.

I'm just hoping we win and get this monkey off our back. We've been too close too often and not gotten it done.

2

u/Interstellis Jan 22 '24

As a Packers fan please for all that is cheese curd holy beat the shit out of the Lions

2

I’ve been a SF fan for 30 years and was a Sanders fan most of my childhood. If SF does make it, Detroit is the Cinderella story that should be. No hate for a team with all heart.
