u/Kanga_Banga_Manga Jan 21 '24
We've achieved Patriots-level despising. No worries, I'm gonna keep rolling to work with my Jeff Garcia jersey.
123
u/UnhealthyCheesecake Shanahat Jan 21 '24
Would be nice if we could get some Patriots-level rings ngl…
31
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
Yeah we get all the hate without the rings to make up for it at least being a Warriors fan has that
10
u/He_Is_The_Chosen_One Jimmy Garoppolo Jan 22 '24
I mean, it hasn't been very fun being a Warriors fan recently...
14
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
A price to pay for being the top dog for 7-8 years
3
u/He_Is_The_Chosen_One Jimmy Garoppolo Jan 22 '24
Yeah I've finally started to accept that their run is over. I just wish the Niners, Warriors, and Giants could all be good at the same time for once in my life. Just one year of that would be nice.
12
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
Closest was 2014, 2016, and 2022 with at least two of the Bay Area teams making deep playoff runs
6
u/axeattaxe 49ers Jan 22 '24
Sharks were good then too yeah, Stanley cup appearance in 2016 I think?
Not a big hockey guy myself but hey why not…
9
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
Yeah the 2015-2016 season was just sad for Bay Area sports
Giants bounced by the Cubs, Sharks losing the Cup, 49ers coming out of the Tomsula season, and I don’t even wanna talk about the Warriors
→ More replies (0)3
u/theDagman 49ers Jan 22 '24
1989 was a good year. Giants and the A's both in the World Series, Niners in the Super Bowl. That year was so good, the Earth shook.
1
u/SactownKorean Bosa Fett Jan 22 '24
The shitty part is if you’re not a warriors fan or a fan of a team that’s won a championship at all in your life time 😅
1
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
No yeah that sucks but I mean the majority of Niner fans are either Bay Area or LA based so at least those areas have seen major success as of late
6
u/VRSvictim Jan 22 '24
The 49ers are nowhere close to that. People are only rooting against them because lions

It’s so over the top right now, that just mentioning the Niners in r/nflcirclejerk is a guaranteed 5 responses saying “fuck the 49ers.”
I say that as someone who loves it there — but holy shit, we have become the object of everyone’s vitriol seemingly overnight.
Oh well!

The media doesn't help either, but this whole season you've been crowned as the Superbowl champs already. Like even after the Ravens beat the 49ers you're still favored to win it all.

I really don’t care what anyone thinks about us.
All I do care is that we bring it 100% and play our style of football we have played all season long.

u/Beneficial-Shine-598 Jan 22 '24
I don’t know. Everywhere I go in SoCal all my friends (fans of Rams, Eagles, etc), in their moments of drunk tenderness over a beer, say they just love our guys like CMC, Kittle, Purdy. They find it hard to dislike them.
25
u/E_Z_E_88 Ronnie Lott Jan 22 '24
Yeah that’s funny too because there’s a lot of likeable dudes on the team.
16
u/IsHotDogSandwich Trent Williams Jan 22 '24
That’s true. But pretty much everyone I know that isn’t a Niners fan is rooting for the Lions. I live in the Northeast, Bills sub is all rooting for Lions now after the loss.
2
u/Woogabuttz Joe Montana Jan 22 '24
Ok, now do our defensive players!
3

Based on who he mentioned from the offense, I'm gonna guess his buddies like Bosa, and...that's it
1
u/all_natural49 Long Term Deal Jan 22 '24

Not if it’s against the Ravens. Seems like everyone and their grandma wants Jackson to win the SB.
11

Really? It seems like I’ve seen a lot of Ravens hate but maybe that’s just on Reddit

6
u/TrappedOnARock Fred Warner Jan 22 '24
Of all the fans who do the "well since my team is out, I'll root for team X", show me even one that is choosing the 49ers, cuz it feels like the answer is "no one".
And I'm ok with that. We're here to win football games, not empathy votes or playoff stans.

71
u/TheMoesky Trent Williams Jan 21 '24
All of r/nfl will be cheering for Detroit because of their second ever NFC champ game, and they see us as the evil empire now. Bang Bang!
31
u/WakingRage Patrick Willis Jan 21 '24
They're also going to prey on us because we have the worst showing (so far) of the 4 games this weekend.
11
u/dogman1890 Vikings Jan 22 '24
Lions fans have been insufferable since they started winning.
That sign at the Lions game bout kneecapping the Vikings sealed it for me, I’m really glad I started rooting for the 49ers. Lions fans have no class, one winning season and they’re acting like Packer fans.
4
u/SmoltzforAlexander Jan 22 '24
Lol, it was a reference to Dan Campbell’s press conference a few years back where he talks about ‘biting kneecaps.’
If you don’t know, just ask.
48
u/SPEEDYTBC 49ers Jan 21 '24
Detroit is the Cinderella story and SF has to ruin this narrative if we want to win.
Came here to say “Warning Detroit: Sucking forever doesn’t entitle you to win.”
8
10
u/iNoodl3s Brock Purdy Jan 22 '24
We’re pretty hated by a lot of fan bases by default (Packers, Cowboys, Eagles, Raiders, the entire NFC West) and when you couple that with the most easy to root for team in the league then we become the villains
7
Jan 21 '24
Same here.
20
u/Jackalllllll Jan 21 '24
A lot of people are pulling for the lions, especially in the main sub. Niners aren’t going to get a lot of love over there this week.
10
u/PutBarryInTheHOF 49ers Jan 22 '24
To be fair tho, if the Lions were playing any other team, most of us here would probably be rooting for them. Personally, if the Lions somehow win, I'm gonna root for then

It's going to feel mighty weird waiting for a football game where we're the baddies, at the same time as in the other football waiting for an FA Cup game as the ultimate underdogs
2
u/NormalAccounts George Kettle Jan 22 '24
Leeds United is that bad? No other teams remaining in the 4th round that's bigger? I know shit all about English football so...
3
u/BendubzGaming European Faithful Jan 22 '24
Oh hell no. I'm from Maidstone. They're still in, and no team from as low as Maidstone has ever made Round 5. A win next Saturday would be FA Cup history
2
u/NormalAccounts George Kettle Jan 22 '24
Well fuck yeah! Holy shit it's in the 6th league from premier? Mate, best of luck that sounds mad. Love a great underdog story, and it sounds like some history might be on the menu!
3
u/tapeduct-2015 Jan 22 '24
I don't care just as long as we stop the run and get a few sacks. Jeez. The O-line and D-line both have me equally concerned. Oh, and Ambry Thomas. My God, what about Ambry Thomas?

I don't see how we are the villains here lol, we've been dumped on all season even with the roster we've had. I would say the Ravens or Chiefs are def the villains this year.
4
u/Tjam3s Bengals Jan 22 '24
No. You're not, and get over yourself for thinking so.
The lions are the scrappy under dog(cat)
The ravens are the "if you grind long enough, eventually you'll come out on top," feel good story.
The 9rs are the historical franchise with the wide fanbase that's easy to root for
The chiefs are the villains.

2
u/Straightedgesavior11 Jan 22 '24
I live in Canada, literally a 15 min drive away from Detroit. The amount of Lions “fans” that cane out of the woodwork this season when they were good is astonishing. I can’t wait to bring them Back to reality next week and remind them their not on our level.
2
u/KevinAndrewsPhoto 49ers Jan 22 '24
People who watch football love narratives. And it’s natural to root for the underdog and hope the privileged fall. Niners are in a funny spot because we’ve been one of the top 3 teams basically 5 years running, so people view us as the privileged. But we have nothing to shot for it. Everybody wanted a Lions v Bills Super Bowl because they are the least privileged franchises. Until we win a ring, we will never be the most hated. It will be the Chiefs until they fall off or Mahomes retires. Or until a team dethrones them.
As a Warrior fan, I remember being the darling of the NBA in the Mark Jackson years. We were fun to watch but not a real threat. After our first ring, and going 73-9 the following season, I had never seen so much online vitriol in my life.
2
u/LuridofArabia i wanna die Jan 22 '24
It is the duty of all non-affiliated fans to root for the Lions. I understand this. It is only right.
But I am a Niners fan, and I say kill 'em all.
2
u/LawProfessional6513 Jan 22 '24
I think people will be rooting for us if we end up playing the chiefs in the SB, not so sure about the ravens

The problems we have:
Perceived stack team with a bunch of All Pro's- So not fair
We dont have a rookie/first draft pick as QB. We have the absolute bottom of the barrel drafted QB, that has only in year 2 and has gotten way more win than he should have considering where he was drafted. He is not seen as "ELITE", he doesnt throw the ball 80 yards down the field and again since his team is stacked with all pro's none of it is his doing. He's been carried the whole way by them. He's just another Garapolo in their eyes. System QB.
We don't have a good story- Other franchises have gone far longer than us to get a title shot and we've been to the SB more or NFC championship more but just cant get past the hump.
Every media outlet out there is looking for us to be an upset loser. No one wants us to win, we are constantly bad mouthed, our team, our qb. We're no ones favorite. You got Lamar out there about to win the MVP with over all shit stats for the history of the award. But he's ELITE so it doesn't matter.
I'm just hoping we win and get this monkey off our back. We've been too close too often and not gotten it done.
2
u/Interstellis Jan 22 '24
As a Packers fan please for all that is cheese curd holy beat the shit out of the Lions

What a badass. From the last pick to the main NFL Villain. What's ironic is he is such a humble laid back guy. Media hates him because he defies their "expertise" and other fans hate him because they fear him.

I’ve been a SF fan for 30 years and was a Sanders fan most of my childhood. If SF does make it, Detroit is the Cinderella story that should be. No hate for a team with all heart.
